Question: How was your first year as a team member of JGR?
Anthony: Wow it went by quick but I learned a lot. It is amazing to think back from when I first started, I felt like I was far behind the experienced employees but you pick up so much in the first year. It is not just the training but getting the opportunity to work on so many projects. At JGR you get a ton of hands on experience. I never would have thought I would be working at the level I am in just one year as an accountant.
I really enjoy the family atmosphere at JGR. Everyone in the firm, from one year team members to partners, is very understanding and eager to teach you new things. I would say I was surprised how determined everyone has been to help you grow and achieve your goals.
Q: What helped you get through your first tax season?
Anthony: Other team members did a great job of preparing me for tax season. I knew I would have to work longer hours and even Saturdays, but dinners provided during the week were a big help, and the lunches on Saturdays were always really good! Everyone is in the same boat so time flies by pretty fast. Getting paid overtime didn’t hurt either!
Q: Were there any JGR events you attended this year?
Anthony: I went to the Christmas party at Pyramid Brewery in Walnut Creek, which was fun because we were able to socialize with everyone outside of work and go out afterwards. The Tax Party was another event that I was excited for, because everyone at the firm talks about it and it's unique to JGR. Every year the location of the party is a surprise and this time we went wine tasting in Sonoma, which made for a great day of hanging out with everyone.
Q: Do you actually work directly with the firm’s partners and managers?
Anthony: Most firms say they have an open door policy but here at JGR you truly do work directly with everyone at any level. One of the benefits of working at a smaller firm is everyone interacts together as a team and it’s not just a slogan.
Q: Have you had the chance to go on any vacations?
Anthony: Yes, I didn’t realize how lucky we are to get 4 weeks vacation until I found out my friends weren't able to go on as many trips as me. During the summer when we aren't as busy, I had the opportunity to plan fun vacations, like my trip to Las Vegas. Also I had more free time after work, and even started studying for the CPA exam.
